SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL ENACTED RENT STABILIZATION AND JUST CAUSE PROTECTIONS
On Tuesday, October 19th, the city council of Santa Ana passed rent control! Tenants and residents of Santa Ana won! The new laws became effective on Tuesday, Nov 19th - 30 days after the final vote by City Council. The City of Santa Ana has created an informational website about it here: https://www.santa-ana.org/protections-for-renters More information about the ordinances is below
The opposition was angry about this. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a referendum petition campaign to gather signatures to repeal the laws before they could come into effect. They paid signature gatherers to door knocking and post up in front of grocery stores in our neighborhoods. But they were unsuccessful and did not even present the scant amount of signatures which had been collected to the City Clerk’s office. Thus, tenants in Santa Ana finally are able to enjoy stabilized rents (for those who live in qualified units) and are able to enjoy protections against arbitrary and unjust evictions via the Just Cause ordinance.
If you saw these signature gatherers lying in public about what the new ordinances would or would not do, video recordings of their lies can be recorded and submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s office for consideration of misdemeanor charges. In addition to reporting your experience to the OC DA’s office, you can also submit a complaint to the California Secretary of State via fax or an using an online fax sercvice such as faxzero.com .
